Intel has secured a patent for integrating MicroLED technology directly into processor packaging. The design utilizes a glass substrate to house microscopic LED arrays, which can be connected to the CPU die or via nanowires. Power and control signals are managed through through-glass via (TGV) interconnects.
The patent, filed in 2022 and published in September 2026, details how these LEDs can function as status indicators or decorative elements, including RGB lighting for labels on the chip. Intel suggests that the technology could support more complex functions beyond simple illumination by utilizing arrays of LEDs within the chip package.
The use of glass substrates is a key component of Intel's broader strategy for advanced processor packaging. The company is developing glass as an alternative to organic materials, noting that it can increase interconnect density by up to ten times. This advancement is intended to support the development of complex multi-die systems.
