Executives from Bitwise and Coinbase highlight the architectural design of Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as a key factor for institutional adoption. The protocol separates message confirmation from asset execution, a feature intended to address security and risk concerns in cross-chain transfers.

The system utilizes a decentralized oracle network and a Committee Verifier consisting of 16 independent node operators. CCIP 2.0, which launched on September 28, 2026, introduced this committee structure alongside optional Cross-Chain Verifiers for additional security layers.

Institutional usage has grown significantly. In December 2025, Coinbase chose CCIP as the exclusive bridge for its wrapped assets portfolio, valued at approximately $7 billion. BitGo followed in early 2026, migrating over $7.7 billion in WBTC holdings to the protocol.

Following the launch of CCIP 2.0, the platform saw over $15 billion in asset migrations. Currently, the protocol secures more than $84 billion in total value, with Bitwise President Teddy Fusaro noting its increasing traction among institutional market participants.
