IBM subsidiary Anderon has secured a $1 billion agreement with the US Department of Commerce under the CHIPS program. The funding is designated for the development of quantum wafer production at a facility in Albany, New York. IBM will contribute an additional $1 billion from its own capital to support the project.

The facility is designed to manufacture 300-mm quantum wafers for multiple developers. The production process focuses on superconducting qubit arrays, quantum input-output components, and readout circuits, utilizing IBM's proprietary technology and specialized equipment. The company reports that initial products are already moving through the production line.

This initiative aligns with IBM's broader strategy to expand its quantum computing business. In June, the corporation announced a plan to invest over $10 billion into quantum research, production, and ecosystem development over five years. CEO Arvind Krishna expects these investments to impact revenue and profit by 2028–2029.
