Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue has publicly questioned the recent warnings regarding AI extinction risks voiced by former Anthropic researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner. Delangue compared Aschenbrenner's expertise to that of an air conditioning technician discussing climate change, suggesting his perspective lacks the necessary breadth to address such complex systemic issues.
Aschenbrenner, who previously worked at OpenAI, resigned this week. He claims that developers at leading AI companies privately believe that advanced artificial intelligence capable of self-improvement could potentially lead to human extinction by the end of the 2020s. He insists that these concerns are genuine and not merely a marketing tactic.
Delangue clarified that his comparison was not intended to discredit Aschenbrenner but to emphasize the need for a more comprehensive discussion. He noted that Aschenbrenner's professional focus was primarily on pre-training models using large datasets rather than on AI safety research. Delangue advocates for incorporating a wider range of expert voices.
