Huawei engineers introduced the experimental XMFS file system at the Linux Pipeline Technology Conference held in the Czech Republic. The system is designed for Linux servers equipped with CXL 3.0 or Huawei Unified Bus, utilizing semantic memory interconnect technology to enable direct access to remote memory as if it were local.

The primary goal of XMFS is to provide shared memory access between nodes via the standard POSIX file system interface. This allows applications to utilize the system without requiring changes to their internal logic. The design aims to streamline operations in environments where high-performance computing is critical.

During performance tests presented at the conference, XMFS demonstrated higher efficiency compared to the traditional TMPFS. The system also shows advantages over existing solutions like FAMFS and DAXFS due to its native support for standard POSIX operations, which simplifies integration for developers.

Huawei has completed testing and validation of XMFS for specific use cases, including multi-node container image sharing and workloads that are metadata-intensive. The company positions the technology as a practical solution for AI deployments and high-performance computing tasks that require frequent metadata access.
