Huawei rotating chairman Eric Xu addressed the recent calls from US AI firms to slow down development during the Huawei Connect conference held on September 17. Xu noted that the current development levels between China and the US differ significantly.
According to Xu, Chinese AI models are mostly open-source and transparent. He argued that Chinese providers should accelerate their progress to reach a level where they can better understand the potential risks associated with advanced AI technologies.
The debate over slowing AI development gained momentum after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an article on September 12 calling for coordinated control. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk expressed support for this perspective.
In contrast, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang challenged the narrative during a Salesforce event on September 15. Huang stated that safety and speed are not mutually exclusive and that the industry does not require new regulations.
Huang further noted at the All-In Summit that the discourse in China remains pragmatic. He emphasized that there is no widespread discussion of apocalyptic scenarios or AI-driven disasters within the Chinese market.
