HSBC announced the creation of a new research institute in Hong Kong, scheduled to begin operations in early 2027. The facility will focus on artificial intelligence, blockchain technology, and post-quantum cryptography.
The institute will launch with a team of at least 35 experts. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand the bank's AI capabilities in the region, with plans to increase the local team from 150 to 300 specialists over the next two to three years.
The project serves as a strategic hub for AI investment and decision-making covering the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. The move follows regulatory discussions with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority regarding the bank's concurrent development of an AI center in Singapore.
HSBC currently maintains technology partnerships with companies including Mistral AI, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. The bank has also been testing generative AI applications within the regulatory sandbox managed by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
