HP laptop users have reported system failures following the installation of Windows 11 updates, specifically KB5121003 released in August and included in the September patch cycle. Affected devices often freeze at the boot screen during restart, forcing users to trigger an automatic update rollback.

The issue stems from a compatibility conflict between Microsoft's recent updates and HP BIOS firmware. Even after manual reinstallation attempts, the system continues to hang at the HP logo, requiring a hard power-off to initiate the recovery process.

HP has acknowledged the problem and released a BIOS firmware update, version F.07.Rev.A (sp174502.exe), on September 4. The company states that this patch improves system stability specifically when running Windows 11 updates. Users are advised to install this firmware before applying further Windows patches.

For those currently stuck, HP recommends a temporary workaround: force a shutdown, enter the BIOS menu by pressing F10 during startup, reset settings to default using F9, and save changes with F10. Note that this process clears custom configurations like hardware virtualization, fTPM, and PXE settings, which must be re-enabled manually.
