Indian power electronics manufacturer Hirect has successfully completed acceptance testing for its proprietary 6,000 hp electric locomotive propulsion system. The unit, which includes liquid-cooled IGBT traction inverters and converters alongside custom control software, was tested in a WAG-9 locomotive under demanding thermal conditions and heavy freight loads.
This qualification allows Hirect to supply its propulsion package to the global locomotive market, supporting new-build, retrofit, and hybrid projects. The company has also received its first development order from the Modern Coach Factory of Indian Railways to provide complete propulsion systems for four Mainline Electric Multiple Unit trainsets.
The 24-month contract for the trainsets encompasses traction transformers, traction motors, and the integrated Train Control and Management System. Unlike traditional locomotives, these units distribute traction equipment beneath the train cars. Hirect intends to use these technologies to support the industry transition from diesel to electric and hydrogen power.
The company's broader rail portfolio includes SiC battery chargers, auxiliary power supplies, and HVAC systems. Chairman and Managing Director Suramya Nevatia stated that the firm manages the entire production cycle, from dielectric coatings on copper wiring to the development of complex control software.
