Valve has released a new update for the VR shooter Half-Life: Alyx, which was originally launched on March 23, 2020. This marks the first major patch for the title since 2022, following the recent release of the Steam Frame VR headset.
The update introduces foveated rendering, an optimization technique that maintains high detail in the center of the user's field of view while reducing it in peripheral areas. This feature was previously exclusive to the Steam Frame headset.
As of the update released on October 27, 2026, foveated rendering is now available for the PC version of the game. Valve notes that while the option can be enabled on various VR headsets, it is most effective when paired with eye-tracking technology.
The company has provided a guide detailing how to configure eye tracking for foveated rendering across a wide range of VR hardware. Meanwhile, reports suggest that the development team has been working on a project codenamed hlx for five years.
