The developer of the open-source agent-wow project conducted an experiment where an AI agent powered by GPT-6 Astra completed the orc starting zone in World of Warcraft. The process took approximately 40 minutes, and the character did not die during the run. The experiment was performed on a private server running the AzerothCore software rather than official Blizzard servers.

Unlike traditional AI gaming agents, this system did not use computer vision or screen captures. Instead, it interacted directly with the server via network protocols. The agent was tasked with creating an orc character and completing all starting zone quests. It autonomously developed the necessary tools for navigation, combat, and object interaction without pre-provided scripts.

The AI processed dozens of server message types and used Python scripts to convert raw data into a readable state. It also utilized SQL files from the AzerothCore database to identify quest locations, NPC data, and object spawn points. For navigation, the agent generated a C++ program using the Detour library and internal map data to calculate movement paths.

The agent performed standard gameplay actions, including selling items, equipping gear, and learning abilities. During the run, it identified areas with incomplete collision data and exploited them. Because the agent accessed internal server information and non-public interfaces, the developer noted that the results cannot be compared to standard player experiences or used as a formal gaming benchmark.
