Google has introduced new subscription models for Android developers on the Play Store, focusing on usage-based billing and flexible purchasing options. These updates are designed to accommodate applications with variable costs, such as generative AI tools, where fees depend on consumption levels.

The new pay-as-you-go system allows for automatic balance top-ups once a user-defined threshold is reached. Additionally, organizations and educational institutions can now execute bulk purchases, acquiring multiple subscriptions in a single transaction to distribute among group members.

The platform now supports a 'Mixed Cart' feature, enabling the sale of auto-renewing subscriptions alongside one-time digital purchases. Developers can leverage this to offer bundled discounts for combined items within their applications.

Furthermore, the 'Cross-Developer Bundling' feature allows different developers to create joint packages. This enables services like language learning apps and travel guides to offer a single, discounted subscription for their combined offerings.

These payment mechanisms are currently being rolled out to developers through an early access program.
