Google has expanded its AI Contribution Pilot program, which provides payments to publishers for content used in Gemini responses, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Participants can track their monthly earnings and history through a dedicated widget in Google Search Console.

Payments are determined by the perceived value of the content to AI responses rather than usage volume. While Google describes the initiative as an early-stage experiment to reward quality journalism, some participants have reported that the initial payouts are modest compared to traditional advertising revenue.

The program currently includes several dozen publishers, with interest notably higher among small and medium-sized outlets. Google maintains regular communication with partners, though publishers have expressed concerns regarding transparency and the potential impact of these payments on future negotiations.

This initiative is separate from the News AI program launched in December 2025, which involves major media outlets like The Guardian and The Washington Post. While the latter focuses on licensing fees for broader content usage, the AI Contribution Pilot targets specific contributions to AI-generated answers.

Additionally, Google introduced a new report in Search Console on August 31, 2025, allowing site owners to monitor the performance of their content within AI search features. This tool provides data on impressions and geographic reach, though it does not track direct traffic to the websites.
