Google has officially integrated native support for Markdown files into its Google Docs and Google Drive platforms. Users can now open, edit, and collaborate on .md files directly within these applications without needing to convert them to other formats.

The updated functionality allows users to view rendered Markdown documents, including structured tables and clickable links. The system also supports real-time editing and commenting features, facilitating seamless collaboration on technical documentation.

According to Google, this update is designed to improve workflows involving AI agents, as Markdown is increasingly used as a standard language for human-AI interaction. The feature also enables synchronization with Gemini Notebook.

The rollout of this update began on October 5. Google noted that the deployment is gradual, and it may take up to 15 days for the new functionality to become available to all users across the platform.
