Google is developing a new feature for Gemini called Gemini Calling, which allows the AI to make calls to personal contacts on behalf of the user. Unlike the existing Call for Me tool, which is limited to business interactions like restaurant reservations or service inquiries, this new functionality aims to facilitate communication with friends and family.
The feature is designed to convey short messages or ask simple questions, such as informing a relative about a delay or checking if a friend is attending an event. The AI handles the dialing and the conversation, acting as an intermediary between the user and the recipient. Currently, the feature is in the early testing phase, discovered via APK teardown.
Google is implementing granular permission controls to manage the AI's autonomy, allowing users to define what actions Gemini can perform across different applications. This approach addresses concerns regarding AI agency, as the ability to represent a user in real-world conversations carries risks related to potential misuse or automated spam.
To mitigate the risk of unwanted automated calls, Google is exploring mechanisms for recipients to block AI-generated communications. The company already restricts its existing Call for Me tool, prohibiting its use for emergency services, financial transactions, or telemarketing. These features are currently limited to specific Pixel devices and markets.
