Google announced an investment of at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) in Finnish AI infrastructure and data centers on September 9, 2026. The funds will be deployed between 2027 and 2028 to build new facilities in Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, alongside an expansion of the existing Hamina campus.

The project is expected to support over 37,000 jobs during construction and sustain 7,000 ongoing roles once operational, with wages projected to be 24% above the Finnish median. The investment is forecast to contribute an average of €3.6 billion annually to the national GDP.

To power these sites, Google signed a 22-year agreement with Fortum to purchase up to 50% of the output from the Loviisa nuclear plant. Additionally, the company has secured wind energy contracts and a 94 MW battery storage system to manage grid stability.

On October 6, 2026, the Finnish Licensing and Supervisory Agency ordered a halt to work at the Muhos and Kajaani sites. The regulator cited the clearing of forests before the completion of environmental impact assessments. Google has since pledged compliance and initiated biodiversity measures, including planting 130 hectares of trees.
