Google Cloud has introduced Gemini Agent, a universal enterprise tool designed for task delegation rather than simple chat interactions. The system functions by receiving high-level objectives, after which it autonomously plans workflows, selects necessary tools, and connects to internal company systems to produce results.
The agent utilizes four types of memory: session memory for ongoing tasks, semantic memory for knowledge bases, procedural memory for learned skills, and episodic memory for tracking past actions. It integrates with platforms including Slack, Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow, BigQuery, and Snowflake, while supporting the Model Context Protocol.
The platform orchestrates various models, including Google’s Argon, Flash, Omni, and Gemma, alongside Anthropic’s Claude. Within Google Workspace, the agent operates as a persistent teammate with its own account, email, and calendar, allowing colleagues to collaborate with it directly in documents and chats.
For data engineering, the agent generates PySpark code and manages model training. It also features three grounding services: Knowledge Catalog, Smart Storage for unstructured data, and Borderless Lakehouse for querying Amazon S3 and Azure Data Lake without egress fees.
Management controls include multi-model orchestration, Smart Routing to optimize costs, and real-time spend caps set via the Cloud Billing Console. Google reports that its TPU 8i system provides 80% better price-performance compared to the previous generation of hardware.
