Goldman Sachs reports that Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) are prepared to sell equities regardless of market direction over the coming week. These systematic, trend-following funds currently hold approximately $106 billion in global equities, with $34 billion to $47 billion allocated to US stocks.
The bank estimates weekly mechanical selling pressure will range between $6 billion and $33 billion. If the S&P 500 index breaches the support level of 6,707, the volume of unwinds could exceed $80 billion over the course of a month.
The firm's proprietary Panic Index has reached 9.22, a level described as max fear territory. This indicator, which tracks options market sentiment and hedging demand, suggests that institutional investors are preparing for increased market volatility.
Goldman Sachs identifies the 6,707 level on the S&P 500 as a critical pivot point. A sustained decline below this threshold is expected to significantly intensify the selling pressure from CTA funds, shifting the market outcome from orderly to disorderly.
