Satellite operator Globalstar has partnered with Skylo to extend satellite messaging services to Android smartphones. Globalstar has supported Skylo's application to the FCC to serve up to 250 million devices, utilizing radio frequencies already licensed to Globalstar.
Skylo currently provides satellite connectivity for select Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy models. Unlike Globalstar, Skylo operates by partnering with existing satellite providers rather than maintaining its own orbital constellation.
Globalstar is preparing to deploy its C-3 satellite constellation, which received FCC approval on October 8. The system will consist of 48 primary satellites at an altitude of 1414 km and up to 6 backup units at 680 km, with the first 12 launches scheduled for early to mid-2027.
Amazon is acquiring Globalstar for $11.6 billion, a move that will see Apple divest its stake in the operator. Amazon plans to integrate Globalstar into a broader strategy to provide satellite connectivity across various mobile platforms, including iPhone and Apple Watch.
Beyond the C-3 project, Amazon intends to deploy a massive constellation of 5105 satellites to compete directly with SpaceX Starlink Mobile and AST SpaceMobile in the direct-to-device satellite market.
