According to the McKinsey Global Farmer Insights 2026 report, 17% of farmers globally now utilize generative AI for agricultural tasks. This adoption rate makes AI one of the fastest-growing technologies in the sector, while robotics and electric machinery remain less common.

The highest adoption rates are currently observed in North and South America, where farmers leverage AI for daily decision-making. This trend emerges amid a prolonged industry downturn, characterized by high and volatile costs for labor, land, and fertilizers since the 2021–2022 peak.

On September 1, 2026, at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, John Deere introduced JD, a generative AI chatbot integrated into its Operations Center platform. The tool processes field, machine, and operational data to provide real-time insights for farmers.

The system enables users to compare fuel consumption, analyze the impact of equipment settings on crop yields, monitor operator performance, and determine optimal harvest timing. John Deere has not disclosed the specific language model powering the assistant.

Limited early access for select US customers began on September 1, 2026. A broader release is scheduled for late 2026, with plans to integrate the AI into onboard displays later. Future iterations will target lawn care, construction, and forestry sectors.
