Germany’s digital affairs ministry stated on September 1 that halting artificial intelligence development is not a viable option for Europe. The ministry emphasized that strengthening digital sovereignty requires continued innovation in the AI sector.
This position follows a proposal by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who suggested that AI firms should slow down project development and implement stricter controls, such as embedding independent evaluators within companies.
The German government is currently monitoring global AI developments and advocates for international coordination on governance. Officials are raising the issue at the G7 level, noting that effective oversight requires the participation of both the United States and China.
Reports indicate that Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI have held discussions regarding the creation of an industry standards body. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed support for testing and auditing regulations, suggesting that major labs should establish these standards independently of the US federal government.
Meanwhile, data from PYMNTS Intelligence reveals that corporate AI adoption remains linked to previous technology usage. Among businesses that did not use first-generation AI, 91% have not adopted newer tools, while 63% of companies with prior experience have integrated new AI into their workflows.
