The US Federal Trade Commission is intensifying its investigation into leading AI labs, including OpenAI and Anthropic. The agency plans to issue formal demands, similar to subpoenas, requiring these companies to provide detailed information regarding potential consumer risks associated with their technologies.

FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson is leading the effort to draft civil investigative demands. The agency intends to legally compel executives from major AI firms to provide testimony concerning their products and the potential threats these systems may pose to the public.

Prior to this escalation, the FTC had already requested internal records from companies like OpenAI to assess the impact of AI chatbots on the mental health of children and teenagers. The agency is focusing on holding AI enterprises legally accountable for the actions of their models.

In a separate development, leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and xAI met at the White House this week. Executives including Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, Sundar Pichai, and Elon Musk signed an agreement pledging to implement self-regulation and safety measures for their artificial intelligence models.
