The FreeBSD project has officially released version 14.5-RELEASE. This update serves as a maintenance release for the FreeBSD 14 stable branch, focusing on security patches, driver improvements, and system stability rather than introducing major new features.
The release addresses several critical vulnerabilities, including remote code execution, denial-of-service, and kernel stack issues. Developers noted that many of these security flaws were identified with the assistance of artificial intelligence and large language models, a trend observed across other open-source projects.
Software components have been updated to include LLVM 21.1.8, ncurses 6.6, OpenSSL 3.0.21, and XZ 5.8.3. These updates ensure users have access to current toolchains and libraries while maintaining compatibility within the existing stable branch.
Hardware support enhancements include improved ACPI power management for Apple Mac computers with dual GPUs and expanded SATA controller support via the AHCI driver. However, the ASMC driver has dropped support for 32-bit Intel-based Mac systems.
FreeBSD 14.5 provides a stable path for users who are not yet prepared to migrate to FreeBSD 15. The new version is currently available for download through the official FreeBSD project website, accompanied by detailed release notes.
