Framework opened pre-orders for its new desktop PC featuring the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 processor on September 30. Despite a high starting price of $6,799 for the DIY version, the initial batch sold out within hours.
The flagship model includes 192GB of LPDDR5X-8533 unified memory, a 16-core Zen 5 CPU with a 5.2GHz boost clock, and a Radeon 8065S GPU. The system's 55W TDP can be configured up to 120W.
A pre-assembled version priced at $7,449 includes a 2TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD and Fedora 44 KDE Plasma Edition. The DIY version excludes storage, allowing users to provide their own SSDs.
The high cost is attributed to the limited supply and rising prices of high-density 128Gbit LPDDR5X memory modules. Framework warned that future pricing and availability remain dependent on supplier costs.
The second batch of systems is scheduled to begin shipping in November. Framework noted that the 192GB unified memory architecture allows for local execution of large AI models, reducing reliance on cloud services for sensitive data.
The 4.5-liter chassis supports various tasks including AI inference, gaming, and development. While the 192GB capacity enables loading larger models, performance remains subject to GPU compute power, memory bandwidth, and software optimization.
