Tom Siegel, the founder of Google's Trust and Safety team, has called for a deceleration in AI development. He warns that the technology industry is repeating past mistakes made by social media platforms, potentially causing significant harm to children.
Siegel has joined Common Sense Media, a non-profit organization established in 2003, as the inaugural executive director of its Youth AI Safety Institute. The institute, launched in May, receives support from Anthropic and the OpenAI Foundation.
The former Google executive, who worked at the company from 2004 to 2019 and later co-founded TrustLab, aims to establish accountability standards for AI firms. He advocates for stricter age verification and features that allow users to disable AI search summaries.
Siegel identifies risks such as cognitive offloading, where reliance on AI diminishes critical thinking, alongside concerns regarding mental health. He warns that companies failing to implement safety measures face future regulatory and legal consequences.
In response, Google stated that parents can restrict search engine access for children, noting that AI search tools serve as educational resources. OpenAI stated that it employs account and behavioral signals to identify minors and continues to refine its verification systems.
