Bilal Chughtai, a former Google DeepMind researcher specializing in AI safety and alignment, has publicly warned about the risks posed by current artificial intelligence development. He stated that he believes AI has the potential to cause catastrophic harm to humanity.

Chughtai's concerns follow similar statements from other industry professionals. Jacob Coxon, formerly of Anthropic and OpenAI, recently criticized his previous employers for prioritizing the pursuit of self-improving superintelligence over safety.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei released an essay advocating for a slowdown in the development of advanced AI models to ensure human control. This position has received support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

Despite his warnings, Chughtai remains optimistic about the future of the technology. He has transitioned to a role at BlueDot Impact, a non-profit organization focused on training individuals to interact with AI systems safely.
