Electrek conducted a survey among nearly 2,700 readers regarding the competition between the upcoming Ford Fathom electric pickup and the startup Slate Auto.
The Ford Fathom is positioned as an all-electric truck with a price tag of $30,000. It is expected to be only a few thousand dollars more expensive than the basic version of the Slate Auto pickup.
Survey participants highlighted potential risks for Ford, specifically its nationwide dealer network, which some believe could lead to markups and a poor sales experience for customers.
In contrast, Slate Auto is viewed by some as a modern equivalent of the Model T, focusing on a single color, high user-repairability, and non-franchised local service.
Analysts and commenters noted that the mere announcement of the Fathom could create a 'chilling effect' on Slate Auto orders, as potential buyers may wait to compare the two models.
