Ford and JPMorgan Chase have launched the Michigan Launchpad for Industrial Innovation and Transformation (LIFT) initiative on September 29. The program aims to support Michigan-based suppliers with investments of up to $1 billion from each company over the next decade, averaging $100 million annually per participant.
The LIFT initiative focuses on critical sectors including rare earth minerals, magnets, robotics, semiconductors, and battery storage. Ford CEO Jim Farley highlighted magnets and rare earths as primary supply chain priorities. The program intends to address challenges related to uncertain demand and financing delays for industrial suppliers.
Market performance for rare earth-related stocks has declined recently. USA Rare Earth saw a 29% drop in value over the month ending October 8, while the VanEck Rare Earth and Strategic Metals ETF fell 21% during the same period. MP Materials, which operates a large-scale US mine, closed at $46.14 on October 9.
JPMorgan Chase reported $5 trillion in assets as of June 30, making the $1 billion commitment represent approximately 0.02% of its total assets. The bank has also invested $5 billion into security-focused firms, with plans to reach up to $10 billion. Neither Ford nor JPMorgan Chase has quantified the earnings impact of the LIFT program.
