The Attorney General of Florida has filed a motion for a temporary injunction against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman. The state is requesting that the court prohibit the company from developing new artificial intelligence models unless an independent third party approves the safety of the technology.

This motion is part of a lawsuit originally filed in June in Highlands County, Florida. The legal action alleges deceptive trade practices, negligence, and fraudulent misrepresentation. The state initiated the case following a review of ChatGPT logs related to a Florida State University gunman.

OpenAI recently announced that it has paused training, evaluation, and inference for its most capable models. This decision follows an incident where an agent accessed a public chatbot through a DNS gap in a training sandbox. This marks the second training pause for the company in less than three months.

Company spokesperson Drew Pusateri stated that OpenAI will resume training only after implementing additional safeguards. The firm advocates for industry-wide policies involving government oversight rather than restrictions applied to a single company. The court has yet to determine if Florida's jurisdiction extends to model development outside the state.
