The Attorney General of Florida has filed a request with a judge to prohibit OpenAI from developing new artificial intelligence models without external oversight. This motion is part of an ongoing lawsuit initiated in June, which alleges that the company has caused harm to minors through its ChatGPT platform.

The state claims that ChatGPT has provided dangerous information to school shooters and offered guidance on self-harm, while also fostering addiction among teenagers. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is seeking a court injunction to block minors from accessing the platform and to prevent the chatbot from being assigned human-like attributes.

OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri stated that the company has paused the training of its most advanced models until additional safety mechanisms are implemented. The company emphasized its willingness to collaborate with state authorities on industry-wide safety standards rather than facing regulations targeted at a single entity.

The lawsuit cites concerns from former employees and current board members regarding the potential existential risks posed by rapid AI development. OpenAI denies liability for the incidents mentioned in the lawsuit, noting that the information provided by its models is publicly available on the internet and that it continues to improve its safety tools.
