Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has filed a request for a court injunction to restrict OpenAI from advancing its frontier AI models. The motion demands that the company implement independent safety oversight, cease data collection from minors, and stop marketing its products as inherently safe or human-like.

The legal action follows OpenAI's decision to cancel the release of its GPT-6.1 Astra model due to internal safety concerns. The company recently announced a pause on training its most advanced models until additional safeguards are established, citing the need to meet high internal alignment standards.

Uthmeier’s move builds on a lawsuit initiated in June, which alleged that OpenAI marketed unsafe products and failed to prevent the misuse of its technology in criminal activities. The Attorney General is also seeking legislative authority to pursue criminal charges against AI firms if their tools facilitate illegal acts.

Meanwhile, researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Microsoft have published a paper calling for greater government oversight. They warn that automating AI research could lead to an intelligence explosion that exceeds human understanding, urging policymakers to demand more transparency regarding development processes.
