UK transport operator First Bus has scaled its smart charging infrastructure at the Caledonia depot in Glasgow. The system, developed by Optimo Energy, now manages 172 charging outlets, a significant increase from the 34 outlets used during the pilot phase that launched in May.
The technology optimizes charging schedules by analyzing operational requirements, current electricity prices, and grid demand. This approach ensures that all electric buses remain ready for service while allowing the company to adjust power consumption based on real-time grid conditions.
The Caledonia facility, one of the largest bus depots in the UK, operates with a 5 MW grid connection but maintains a potential charging load of 12 MW. The smart system enables the operator to manage this discrepancy without needing to charge every vehicle at maximum power simultaneously.
By participating in energy flexibility markets, First Bus can now sell surplus energy back to the power grid. This strategy creates a new revenue stream from the existing charging infrastructure while supporting grid stability during periods of high demand or increased renewable energy production.
