The combined annual recurring revenue (ARR) of all Chinese AI models currently stands at approximately $10.7 billion. This figure represents roughly 10% of the revenue levels recently reported by OpenAI and Anthropic. The report highlights a significant disparity in financial performance between the leading U.S. AI startups and their counterparts in China.
Investment levels in China’s AI sector are estimated at 15% to 20% of the capital deployed in the United States. Chinese AI capital expenditures are projected to reach ¥932 billion, or approximately $139 billion, by the end of this year. Forecasts indicate that these expenditures will exceed ¥1.2 trillion, or about $193 billion, by 2027.
Chinese AI firms rely primarily on equity financing and bank loans, as they have not yet utilized bond financing. These companies face challenges where revenues do not cover aggressive capital expenditure plans. Furthermore, state-led investments in China are expected to prioritize the development of chips rather than frontier AI laboratories.
Data from Ramp indicates that 80% of revenue for OpenAI and Anthropic is generated by the top 1% of their customers. This concentration of revenue remains stable despite the increasing number of business clients adopting generative AI tools. Analysts describe this as a level of concentration risk not observed in other software categories.
