Feldera, a San Francisco-based startup, has secured $21.5 million in combined Seed and Series A funding. The Series A round of $15.4 million was led by Inovia Capital with support from Costanoa Ventures and Battery Ventures. An earlier $6.1 million Seed round was led by Costanoa Ventures and included participation from Ion Stoica.
The company was established by five former VMware researchers: Lalith Suresh, Leonid Ryzhyk, Mihai Budiu, Ben Pfaff, and Gerd Zellweger. The team has authored over 200 research papers on distributed systems and database internals. Their work is based on the DBSP mathematical framework for incremental SQL computation.
Feldera offers a database engine that utilizes incremental view maintenance to process only changed data. This approach allows for sub-second updates instead of full recomputations. The startup claims this technology can reduce infrastructure costs by 95% or more for certain workloads, with some users reporting cost reductions of 10 to 100 times.
The platform integrates with existing SQL applications, data warehouses, and data lakes without requiring architectural changes. Current use cases include real-time fraud detection, logistics management, and authorization for AI agents. The funding will support the commercialization of this infrastructure for enterprises.
