A coalition of European businesses and organizations has issued a formal appeal to the European Commission, urging the EU to maintain its current CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles. The signatories emphasize the importance of regulatory stability for the ongoing transition to zero-emission road freight.
The group specifically requests that the EU avoids bringing forward the review of these standards, which is currently scheduled for 2027. According to the signatories, any premature revision or weakening of the existing regulations would create significant investment uncertainty for companies that have already committed to fleet electrification.
The appeal highlights that previous amendments to the standards for the 2025–2030 period could already result in 200 000 fewer electric trucks on European roads over the next decade. Further regulatory changes are expected to compound this negative impact on the industry.
To support the transition, the businesses advocate for the consistent implementation of the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation and the Grids Package. These measures are intended to facilitate the deployment of high-power charging infrastructure necessary for the widespread adoption of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles.
