European Union tech chief Henna Virkkunen stated that current EU regulations are sufficient to manage risks associated with autonomous AI agents. These comments follow global concerns regarding potential loss of human control over advanced systems, specifically referencing incidents at OpenAI and Anthropic.
The EU AI Act, adopted two years ago, establishes a risk-based regulatory framework covering the entire lifecycle of AI models. Regulators are currently providing guidance to companies based on recommendations from 60 AI experts to ensure safety and security standards are met.
In late August, the European Commission requested information from over 30 AI companies regarding their internal safety protocols. This move aligns with broader industry discussions, including concerns from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who noted that rapid recursive self-improvement in AI may outpace human control.
