ENN Group announced a milestone in hydrogen-boron fusion commercialization on its Xuanlong-50U device in late September 2026. This marks the first time a commercial fusion company has achieved a hydrogen-boron reaction on its own equipment, as well as the first clean, neutron-free fusion reaction using advanced fuels in a Chinese magnetic confinement device.
The research team utilized high-energy neutral beam injection combined with radio frequency waves to increase the non-thermal equilibrium fast proton fraction. This resulted in a hydrogen-boron fusion reaction rate exceeding 10^8 per second. Experts from international research institutes confirmed that the experiment successfully measured proton energy spectra and alpha particles, validating the feasibility of the approach.
The company is developing five key technologies to address fusion challenges, including methods to improve reaction rates, manage high plasma temperatures, and enable direct power generation from alpha particles. AI integration is also being used to accelerate development and support stable operation of future commercial reactors.
ENN Group has outlined a three-step strategy for commercialization. The first goal of achieving a reaction was met ahead of schedule. The second step involves lighting the first hydrogen-boron fusion lamp by 2030, supported by the Helong-2 spherical torus device currently under construction and expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The final goal is steady, high-power generation by 2035.
