Elon Musk has announced plans to build a semiconductor manufacturing facility named Terafab. During a discussion with the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley community, Musk acknowledged that he currently lacks the technical expertise required for chip production, noting that he still has much to learn in this field.
The strategy for Terafab involves starting with standard manufacturing equipment. Musk plans to modify this hardware to increase throughput and eventually introduce specialized machinery to address bottlenecks in the production process. The goal is to achieve higher wafer processing speeds through these custom solutions.
The long-term vision for the facility is to integrate key production stages under one roof, including photomask creation, wafer fabrication, and chip packaging. Musk believes this consolidation will accelerate technological improvements, though he estimates the project will take several years to fully realize.
Musk also commented on the rapid development of generative AI, noting its emotional impact. He described experiencing what he termed an AI-induced psychosis approximately six times throughout 2026, driven by his observations of advanced neural network capabilities and their potential.
Regarding AI training, Musk emphasized the critical importance of high-quality data. He warned that the use of false information or contradictory principles during the training process could lead to unpredictable and undesirable outcomes for artificial intelligence systems.
