EKPO Fuel Cell Technologies, a joint venture between ElringKlinger and OPmobility, is presenting the latest iteration of its NM20 fuel cell stack at the IAA Transportation 2026 trade fair. The company focuses on enhancing scalability and manufacturing efficiency for heavy-duty hydrogen powertrains.

The updated NM20 module features a 20 percent reduction in volume and weighs 178 kilograms, which is 39 kilograms lighter than previous versions. The active cell block, known as the Cell Row Assembly, has seen its weight reduced by approximately 25 percent.

The stack architecture now integrates media distribution, water separation, and sensor systems directly into the unit. The product family includes a single-stack module delivering over 200 kW, a max variant exceeding 300 kW, and a twin-stack module providing over 400 kW.

The twin-stack module supports a maximum continuous current of 1,000 amperes and operating pressures up to 3.0 bara. The system is designed for a lifespan of 25,000 operating hours with efficiency levels ranging between 56 and 69 percent.

The technology is suitable for road, rail, and maritime transport, as well as stationary power applications with operating temperatures up to 95°C. The project receives funding of up to €177 million through the European IPCEI program, with Akkodis partnering on a demonstration truck.
