Block CEO Jack Dorsey recently sparked a debate on X by stating there is no moat, a term popularized by Warren Buffett to describe a company's lasting competitive advantage. The post, which garnered over 3.5 million views, follows the introduction of Dessa, a voice AI model developed by a small research team within Block.

The Dessa model was trained using a single Nvidia GB200 NVL72 rack and is designed to run locally on a MacBook. Block has provided early access to a select group of AI safety researchers. This development aligns with Dorsey's earlier decision in February to reduce Block's workforce by approximately 40%, emphasizing that AI tools allow smaller teams to operate effectively.

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of MicroStrategy, countered Dorsey's claim by asserting that Bitcoin serves as the true moat. MicroStrategy currently maintains the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury. Saylor views Bitcoin as a protection against inflation and currency devaluation, contrasting this with the rapid commoditization of AI software.

Elon Musk offered a different perspective, referencing the ancient city of Sparta, which relied on its military strength rather than physical fortifications. Musk has previously described the Bitcoin network as having no throat to choke. These discussions highlight how the rapid evolution of AI and the stability of decentralized assets are increasingly intersecting in the tech industry.
