The U.S. Department of Justice has launched Operation Ghostbusters to dismantle a massive fraud scheme targeting the federal student aid system. Investigations began in 2021 after community colleges and universities reported suspicious activity. Officials estimate that the government has lost over $200 million due to these fraudulent student loan applications.

The operation currently encompasses more than 40 active cases involving 26 FBI field offices and 20 U.S. Attorney’s offices. Authorities have already indicted five individuals. In a significant development, the Department of Justice announced the seizure of more than $750 000 in cryptocurrency linked to a network of Kenyan nationals associated with the scheme.

Fraudsters utilized stolen identities to apply for student loans, with proceeds funneled into bank accounts and moved overseas via money mules. Unsuspecting victims, who never attended college, were left with significant debt. The government is now deploying automated fraud detection systems to combat these sophisticated scams, though this has introduced challenges regarding false positives.
