The US Department of Energy has announced an allocation of $400 million to support scientific research. The funding is primarily focused on advancing studies in basic energy science, fusion, and nuclear physics.
Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil stated that the investment aims to foster breakthroughs in foundational research. The initiative is intended to build scientific grounds for future technologies and maintain global leadership in innovation.
Although the projects are currently focused on terrestrial applications, the funding is expected to impact the space industry. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has previously advocated for significant investments in nuclear-powered space technologies.
Isaacman noted that the agency is looking to invest billions annually into nuclear capabilities for space exploration. This strategy aligns with broader efforts to integrate advanced energy research into future orbital and deep-space missions.
