OpenRouter, which aggregates over 400 models from more than 80 providers, reports a significant shift in developer preferences. Data analyzed by venture capitalist Tomasz Tunguz shows that 84% of tokens processed on the platform now utilize non-frontier models.

These budget-friendly alternatives reportedly deliver 77% of the performance of leading models at only 2.5% of the cost. While premium options like Claude Fable 5 cost $20 per million tokens, non-frontier models average $0.50 per million tokens, with some bottom-tier options priced between $0.03 and $0.21.

The platform notes that AI token costs have dropped from $5.63 to $0.21. This price sensitivity has led to a 14-fold increase in usage for specific models, resulting in a 34% rise in revenue for those options. Additionally, Chinese models now account for over 30% of token consumption by US companies on the platform, peaking at 46%.

OpenRouter facilitates this efficiency through features like floor routing, which identifies the cheapest provider for a specific model. The company does not apply markups to provider rates, instead charging a 5–5.5% fee on credit purchases. Developers can also utilize Batch API offerings to achieve further cost savings through bulk processing.
