Deutsche Bank is increasingly utilizing synthetic risk transfers (SRTs) to manage credit risks associated with its AI-related data center loan portfolio. By the end of 2025, the bank’s retained SRT exposures reached €38.7 billion, marking a 15% increase from the €33.7 billion recorded the previous year.
SRTs function as insurance for loan portfolios, allowing banks to transfer potential losses to external investors while maintaining the loans on their books. This mechanism provides capital relief, enabling the bank to free up regulatory capital for new lending activities. The bank has already provided over $1 billion in financing to EcoDataCenter and 5C.
The broader market for AI infrastructure is expanding, with spending projected to reach $3 trillion by 2030. In 2025, Deutsche Bank completed an SRT deal covering approximately $6.9 billion in corporate loans. Beyond SRTs, the bank is also exploring hedging strategies, such as shorting AI-related stocks to mitigate its exposure.
Other major financial institutions, including JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley, are also investigating SRT techniques for their data center loan portfolios. The European SRT market is growing rapidly, with projections suggesting it could cover roughly €500 billion in protected loans by mid-2026, supported by regulatory encouragement and demand from institutional investors.
