Hackers compromised the software controlling refrigeration systems in hundreds of French supermarkets, raising temperatures to 50 degrees Celsius. The incident affected 80 Carrefour locations and approximately 150 stores owned by Les Mousquetaires. The temperature spike resulted in the loss of millions of euros worth of food and triggered fires in several stores. The French National Cybersecurity Agency is currently investigating the attack.
Cybersecurity incidents have also surged in Asia, with Japan reporting more attacks in the first nine months of 2026 than in all of 2025. In South Korea, financial institutions suffered data breaches affecting tens of thousands of customers, with officials suspecting the use of AI tools in the attacks. These events have driven significant market volatility, impacting major tech stocks while boosting shares of cybersecurity firms.
Market reactions to the rising threat landscape have been mixed. In South Korea, the KOSPI index fell 5.46 percent, with SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics declining, while cybersecurity stocks like AhnLab rose 10.51 percent. Similarly, in Japan, the Nikkei 225 dropped 1.82 percent, whereas Cyber Security Cloud shares climbed 12.97 percent to ¥4,180.
Analysts remain divided on the future performance of the cybersecurity sector. Morgan Stanley suggests further growth potential, noting that only 1.5 percent of enterprise AI investment is currently allocated to security, and raised its price target for Palo Alto Networks to $410. Conversely, Bernstein recently downgraded the same company, suggesting that recent market rallies have already pushed valuations toward or beyond fair value.
