The AI-powered code generation platform Cursor has restricted access for users in Russia. The service became unavailable on September 4, 2026, following an update to the platform's user agreement regarding US export controls.
In August 2026, SpaceX acquired Anysphere, the developer behind Cursor, for $60 billion. Following this acquisition, OpenAI notified SpaceX of its intent to terminate access to the AI models powering Cursor by September 12, 2026, citing concerns over potential service agreement violations.
Market experts suggest that the impact of this restriction will be limited. Developers are reportedly shifting toward alternatives such as Claude Code and Codex, open-source AI models, or domestic services. Some users are also utilizing methods to bypass these regional restrictions.
