The Cursor AI code editor, developed by Anysphere, became inaccessible to users in Russia on September 4, 2026. The service now returns a geographic access denial error to requests originating from the region.

This restriction follows the acquisition of Anysphere by SpaceX in mid-August 2026 for $60 billion. Prior to the shutdown, the company updated its terms of service to include US export control clauses.

Additionally, OpenAI notified SpaceX of its intent to terminate the supply of ChatGPT models to Cursor by November 12, 2026, citing concerns over potential violations of service terms by Elon Musk's companies.

Industry experts suggest the Russian market will adapt to these changes. Developers are expected to shift toward open-source AI models, domestic services, or alternative tools such as Claude Code and Codex.
