Over the past 24 hours, cryptocurrency traders faced $515 million in forced liquidations. This event follows a trend observed throughout 2026, where daily liquidation totals have fluctuated between $386 million and $674 million.
The majority of these liquidations occurred in Bitcoin and Ethereum futures markets. Major exchanges, including Binance, Hyperliquid, OKX, and Bybit, have reported processing volumes exceeding $100 million during periods of high market volatility.
A significant liquidation event also occurred on September 16, when $571 million in long positions were closed following the failure of the Clarity Act in the US Senate. During that incident, Bitcoin and Ethereum each saw approximately $190 million in liquidations.
Forced liquidations are triggered when a trader's margin falls below the maintenance threshold required by an exchange, leading to the automatic closure of positions. Open interest in Bitcoin and Ethereum futures currently remains in the tens of billions of dollars.
