Over a 24-hour period, the cryptocurrency market saw $146 million in long positions forcibly liquidated. The majority of these closures involved Bitcoin and Ethereum, which remain the most popular assets for leveraged trading.
Centralized exchanges including Binance, Bybit, and OKX reported the highest volume of liquidations. The decentralized platform Hyperliquid also experienced a significant number of forced position closures.
Data aggregators like CoinGlass provide conservative estimates, as not all exchanges report full liquidation data. Broader market trackers suggest that total liquidations, covering both long and short positions, may have reached between $200 million and $300 million.
Perpetual futures contracts are particularly vulnerable to these events due to their lack of expiration dates. High leverage levels, such as 10x, 20x, or 50x, mean that even minor price fluctuations can lead to the total loss of a trader's margin.
Forced liquidations often trigger a cascading effect. As exchanges sell off positions to close them, the resulting selling pressure drives prices lower, which in turn triggers further liquidations of leveraged positions.
