The US Department of Commerce intends to transfer the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) to direct White House oversight. The agency currently operates under the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and officials state the move aims to resolve ongoing management and resource challenges.
CAISI, formerly known as the US AI Safety Institute before its rebranding in June 2025, has faced significant leadership instability. Collin Burns left the agency in April 2026, followed by the resignation of Chris Fall in July 2026. Arvind Raman from NIST currently serves as the acting director.
The agency has experienced multiple director removals and a suspension of public AI model assessments. A June 2026 executive order mandated increased oversight, prioritized classified benchmarking by national security agencies, and restricted international collaborations and public reporting.
Major developers including OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have historically engaged with CAISI on a voluntary basis. The shift toward classified reviews and reduced public data may impact the competitive landscape for these firms and limit the shared research baseline for the broader community.
